This article covers the major points our teachers explain to students in their piano lessons about piano care.
The first thing you should consider is where you are going to place your piano in your home. Ideally, put it somewhere people are not going to walk past it constantly. This will avoid accidental scratches.
Place your piano away from anywhere in your home where there are extreme temperature such as heaters, air conditioners and sunlight. Be aware that the timber in your piano can get damaged if you place it where there is too much dryness or humidity. Ideally, place your piano where the temperature is moderate. This will also help it keep in tune.
If you are moving to another house, we recommend you use the services of professional piano removalists. Trying to do it yourself could cause damage to your piano and it could be dangerous to you.
Maintaining a piano does not require a big effort. The two main things you will have to do regularly are:
- Clean the dust off your piano
- Clean the keys of your piano.
It is common for people to put picture frames on top of their pianos. We strongly recommend you do not do that as it can scratch your piano. Also do not put vases of flowers on top of it as water spills can cause problems to the action. Another suggestion is a piano cover. It protects the wood from scratches and also protects your instrument from dust.
When it is time to tune your piano, use only the services of a professional piano tuner. They have the experience needed for the job and can provide you with valuable information on how to care for your instrument. Try to get a recommended piano tuner in your area. Regularly inspect your piano and if something does not seem right contact your piano tuner for advice.
Last but not least, inspect your instrument for insects that could cause damage to it. The larvae of the clothes moth can cause damage to the felt parts of your piano. Also, wood boring insects can cause holes in the wood. If you have any concerns about insect attacks please contact your piano tuner immediately for advice.
To summarize, if you take good care of your piano by following the points covered in this article, you should have a piano that will last you many years. If you would like more information about piano care, please contact us at Do Re Mi Studios.
